SFI Smart Maritime confirmed as springboard for innovation. The Demo-Case Zero Emission Expedition Cruise carried out in cooperation with Smart Maritime partners Vard Design, SITNEF Ocean, Kongsberg Maritime, ABB, Rolls-Royce Bergen Engines and the Norwegian Maritime Authority has uncovered large potential for emission reduction from cruise ships, including up to 20% reduction in power need for ship propulsion using wind power.
The study included distinct hull forms, sails types and alternative zero emission fuels. The ship performance was simulated in distinct weather conditions covering a 5-year period, along a route including Barent Sea, Southern Ocean, South-America, Africa, and Europe.
Vard Design, together with SINTEF Ocean and ABB, will bring these results furhter in a new innovation project CruiZero, funded by the Research Council. The 2-year project will develop solutions for design of a future cruise ship. The goal is zero harmful local emissions and zero greenhouse gas emissions.
